Visa
Foreign Nationals desirous of coming into India are required to possess a valid passport of their country and a valid Indian Visa.

There is no provision of 'Visa on Arrival' in India and no fee is charged for immigration facilities at the airports. Foreign passengers should ensure that they are in possession of valid Indian Visa before they start their journey to India except nationals of Nepal and Bhutan who do not require visa to enter India and nationals of Maldives who do not require visa for entry in India for a period up to 90 days (a separate Visa regime exists for diplomatic/official passport holders).

The Consular Passport and Visa (CPV) Division of the Ministry of External Affairs is responsible for issuance of Indian visas to the foreign nationals for their visit for various purposes. This facility is granted through various Indian missions abroad.

Visa fees are non-refundable and subject to change without notice. The High Commission reserves the right on granting and deciding type/duration of visa irrespective of the fees tendered at the time of making application. Granting of Visa does not confer the right of entry to India and is subject to the discretion of the Immigration Authorities.

Specific Visas are granted for a variety of purposes. Listed below in a tabular form are the types of visa; Categorised on the basis of purpose of staying in India.

Visa Application Form
Visa application form is available at the office of Indian Embassy in the country where the NRI/PIO resides. Visa form for nationals of Pakistan and Bangladesh are generally different. All NRIs/PIOs, including children (who don't possess OCI or PIO card) need to apply for Visa in separate visa forms.

Procedure for obtaining Visa
Visas can be applied for in person or by post at the High Commission of India based in the country from where the candidate intends to depart for India . Specific visas are granted for a variety of purposes that are aforementioned.

Requirements for Visa
Generally the following documents are required for obtaining Indian Visa. However, the requirement may vary from country to country.

Original passport valid for at least 6 months
Visa fee
Two passport size photographs
Supporting documents, where necessary
Duly completed application form

Visa for NRIs and PIOs
Persons of Indian Origins and Non-Resident Indians who possess either OCI (Overseas Indian Citizenship) or PIO card don't need Indian Visa. OCI and PIO give them the freedom to visit India without visa. OCI and PIO cards are multi-purpose life long visa for visiting India.

However, those NRIs and PIOs who don't have OCI or PIO card can apply for and get Indian visa through the procedure mentioned above.

TRAVEL AND TOURS
Chennai has an international Airport. All the international flights arrive at the Anna terminal while domestic flights arrive at the Kamraj terminal. There are 17 international & 5 Indian carriers i.e. Air India , Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, Air Sahara & Air Deccan.

Chennai Moffusil Bus Terminus (CFBT) serves as the terminus for all intercity buses from Chennai. This is the largest bus station in South Asia . Chennai Central &Egmore stations are the main hubs for all long distance trains. There are daily trains from Banglore, Bombay , Delhi & all other cities.

ENTERTAINMENT
Beaches of Chennai are a popular hang out. There are discotheques, amusement parks & wild life sanctuaries in Chennai. There are many spots for trekking swimming & fishing.

SHOPPING
There are two main shopping areas in Chennai, Anna Salai & Parry's Market. There are big & popular Malls like Spencer Plaza , Century Plaza , Rainbow Plaza , Rahaat Plaza , etc.

WEATHER
The general weather of Chennai is hot & humid. The hottest part of the year is late May & early June. Its maximum temperature is around 38-42 degree Celsius. January is the coldest part of the year with minimum temperature of around 19-20 degree Celsius. The city gets most of its rainfall from northeast monsoon winds.

CHENNAI AROUND THE YEAR
Winter and summer temperature does not vary much as it rains frequently throughout the year. Rainfall is timely and tends to be heavy during the monsoons. All the year round the weather of Chennai remains moderate with little variations. Temperatures and humidity remain relatively high all year round. Proximity to the sea makes the atmosphere heavy and humid However, the cool sea breeze makes even the warmest of evenings bearable. The best time to visit Chennai city is the winter season from the months of November to February.

ART AND CULTURE
There are National art gallery & Art World Gallery in Chennai. In National Art Gallery one can see 11th &12th century Indian Handicrafts, 17th century Deccan paintings, 16th to 18th century Mughal & Rajasthani, &10th&13th century bronzes. 8-9 exhibitions are held in a year, with around 45 paintings exhibited in one show. This gallery gives an opportunity to artists to exhibit their works at international shows. Chennai is known for its classical Indian dances i.e. Bharatnatyam.

Fort St. George
Marina Beach: This is the second largest beach in the world.
St.Mary's Church: This building has three arched aisles & a bombproof roof.
Kapaleswarar Temple: This is an ancient Siva temple. The magnificent 37 meter tall gopuram is one of the main attractions of this temple. Goddess Parvati in the form of peacock, is shown worshipping Shiva.
Parthasarthi temple: This temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna.
